Site and Hosting
What Hosting Company Do You Use?
I spent a lot of time on this decision. I got a ton of recommendations for Liquid Web, especially from the indie game
community. However, for a little blogger just starting out, I didn't feel quite ready for the Cadillac plan. So, after soliciting more recommendations, it came down to GoDaddy
and 1&1 Web Hosting. I did a bit of research, and ultimately settled on 1&1 because of the extras (It's the little things...). When
and if my readership expands and I need to move, I'll likely move over to Liquid Web.
What Blog Platform Do You Use?
TimWoodbury.com is proudly powered by WordPress. They have a long history and a well-established user base which, for me, is a gigantic plus.
I had briefly considered running the site with BlogEngine.NET, but the decision to go with Linux hosting pretty much made the platform decision for me. If you're serious about starting a
blog with WordPress, I suggest you visit their Getting Started page.
Who Designed Your Site?
I started with the fantastic Atahualpa theme, and modified it to fit my needs. I designed the banner and site logo using Paint.NET and GIMP.
I turned the logo into the favicon (the little icon in your favorites menu, if you've bookmarked me) using IcoFX.
May I Use Images/Templates/Other Assets From TimWoodbury.com On My Blog?
As templates go, if you're blogging with WordPress I strongly encourage you to check out the Atahualpa theme. It is extremely customizable.
That said, I'm of the opinion that a blogger (or any site owner) should develop his or her own unique look, even if it borrows inspiration from others' styles. I don't make a habit of sharing my specific theme modifications - largely because it's mostly all garbage - and would ask that you please not use images or assets directly from this site.
May I Republish or Translate Articles From TimWoodbury.com?
The short answer is no.
The long answer? I appreciate that you've enjoyed my writing enough to consider republishing it. I would be flattered to be quoted on your site, but please keep it within reason.
Quoting one or two paragraphs from an article is perfectly acceptable, provided that you provide proper attribution and a link back to the source article here.
Please bear in mind that the articles here are copyrighted. Unauthorized use and/or wholesale plagiarism are not acceptable and will not be tolerated. Not to mention it'll just really spoil my whole day.
Blogging
How Often Do You Post?
This is another question I've struggled with a lot (not to be confused with struggling with alot). I decided when I began blogging to not simply post filler to get page views. I am uncompromisingly anal-retentive about the quality of the content on this site.
In my opinion, there are plenty of places on the internet that serve up bitesized information (enough to give you an insulin spike, but not enough to fill you up), and I don't need to be one of them. But I digress...
At this time, you can expect between three(3) and five(5) quality posts per week. "All meat, no filler," as they say.
Are You Ever Going to Host Ads On This Site?
It isn't in my immediate plans, but I also won't rule it out completely. If and when I do, I can promise that I will endeavor to make them as unobtrusive as possible.
What is your policy for affiliate links and reviews.
My affiliation and product review policy is spelled out on the disclosure page.
